Abstract:

Hearing is one of the major senses, and speech is one of our primary means of inter-personal communication. Early detection of hearing problems is associated with improved language development, so it is important to have a quick, effective and cheap screening method. The presence or absence of otoacoustic emissions are an accurate screening metric, but current devices are expensive and the process is inherently sensitive to environmental acoustic noise. This thesis focuses on the development of a wireless, standalone OAE probe. It also investigates the feasibility of utilizing additional microphones to address the environmental noise issue, and capacitive sensing to detect movement of the probe in the ear.
