Interference issues in Wireless Avionics Intra-Communication Networks (Masterthesis)

Wireless Avionics Intra-Communication (WAIC) aims at partially replacing wired networks that interconnect components on-board aircraft by a wireless substitute. Significant cost savings can be achieved because of simplified installation, as well as reduced maintenance effort. Moreover, as copper wires substantially contribute to the overall aircraft load, WAIC can also lead to more fuel efficiency.

One of the biggest challenges in deploying WAIC networks on-board aircraft, is to ensure coexistence between several airplanes that can interfere with one another. This is typically the case at airports, where aircraft can be parked in close proximity to each other. Furthermore, WAIC was allocated a frequency bandwidth that is also used by radio-altimeters installed under the fuselage, which raises a further coexistence issue.

The assessment of interference effects in WAIC networks is the subject of this thesis. To that end, a coexistence scenario involving several airplanes parked in front of a terminal building was studied. Several models are developed to account for all coupling effects between adjacent WAIC systems, and between WAIC and radio-altimeters.

A network simulator is used to quantify precisely the performance loss, and design rules for mitigating interference impact. Simulation results show that significant packet loss rate has to be expected, and gives indications about the amount of resources that must be allocated for retransmissions.
